Smart fraudsters caught by smarter agents
by Zivka Deleva

The US Federal Trade Commission has done a good job! It found a way how to stop fraudsters to steal millions of dollars from consumers that use the online shopping. The investigation lasted four years. The whole procedure wasn't done with big media sensation. The first charge came in March in the state of Illinois, when one civil got a lawsuit. A staff attorney Steven Wernikoff at the FTC thinks that the manipulators have used some holes in the credit card processing system which allowed them to form around one hundred fake companies that made false credit card transactions using legal credit card processing companies. We are talking about fraudsters that worked in Bulgaria! , Cyprus, Estonia. "It was a very patient scam. The people who are behind this are very meticulous. We're going to aggressively seek to identify the ultimate masterminds behind this scheme," - Wernikoff said. On each transaction, the consumers lost at least 0.25 dollars, an amount that seems so neglectable, but if the number of the transactions thousands, than is not a fact that should be neglected. When you see the numbers with which the criminals manipulated, like 1.35 million credit cards from which they stole 9.5 million dollars, than you get a headache. The thing is that these fraudsters have used the fact that the credit cards are more and more used for cheap purchases - like juice machines or parking places. Normal human philosophy is not to be concerned about 20 cent fee, so it is understandable why a lot of people hadn't even noticed the theft. It is weird how comes financial agencies in years couldn't cope with the fraudsters.

GM massive recall due to windshield wiper fluid system failure
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Giant US-based automaker General Motors was forced to recall more than 1.5 million vehicles Tuesday due to a failure that could cause them to catch fire. Models from years 2006-2009 are dealing with the same problem, there is a real danger that the unit that heats windshield wiper fluid could burst into flames. According to the GM director for safety Jeff Boyer, the company will remove the units and replace them with products from a different supplier, because the original one stopped manufacturing the item that is needed. Boyer further added that GM will pay each customer $100 once the repairs are done at dealerships. “While our analysis shows the number of incident! s is very small compared with the number of vehicles on the road, we want our customers to have complete peace of mind,” said Boyer. “We always want to make sure customers can count on the safety and quality of their GM vehicle.” The models involved are for example, Chevrolet Silverado, Avalanche, Suburban, Cadillac Escalade or Hummer H2. It is estimated that the recall will cost GM about $150 million that is if all the customers involved collect their “satisfaction payment”. The biggest amount of recalled vehicles, 1.36 million, were sold in the United States, about 100,000 in Canada and the rest in Mexico and elsewhere. The massive recall is just another blow for a company that was kept out of high-profile bankruptcy thanks to the government bailout. GM is just another automaker in a row to organize recall. After Toyota record high recall due to sudden acceleration problems, there have been also recalls by Ford, Honda, Mazda and Chrysler. At ! the end of 2009, Ford had to issued the largest recall in its ! history, 4.5 million vehicles, due to switch fault. In April 2010, there were several thousand vehicles recalled due to faulty seats.

Thieves caught on the iPhone
by Claudia Sonea

Life is better than any film ever made. The thrill and excitement of the things that happen in real life are far better than anything you can experience through watching a movie. Seeing Titanic cannot even compare with actually being at the scene of the tragedy and awkward as it may sound, there are adrenaline lovers who regret not being there. As some of us are the type that prefers to watch on TV, to read in the press and to listen to stories about the amazing, unusual things that happen all over the world, the other type had to be born. The type that must always be in the center of the events, to live intense an! d on the edge, while keeping the calm to record everything, in writing, on videotape and lately even with the mobile phone. The armed robbery that took place on Monday in Marseille, France, was recorded by an unknown reporter with his iPhone. He kept calm and filmed the incident even while the police and the thieves exchanged fire. It was one rushing experience just to watch the video and there is still the question of how the reporter felt with bullets flying everywhere. Up to present moment there is little information on the identity of the reporter and even less as far as the thieves are concerned. Now, that the crisis hit Europe, life’s hardship pushes many people to steal, but 2.1 million euros is preposterous and shows they were selfish and greedy. Unfortunately, someone had to pay for the whole disaster and as always it was someone who had no implication whatsoever.
