Jingle Jingle Spam
by Claudia Sonea
Unknown emails in your inbox⦠don't open them; they are the Christmas present full of viruses called spam. According to Irish hosting firm IE Internet more than 72 percent of all e-mail messages received by their clients in December were spam and that underlined a slight increase from 3.15 percent in November to 3.35 percent in December. Ken O'Driscoll, IE Internet's chief technology officer, confessed that it has become a trend for spasm to reach their peaks during December due to many reasons: lower levels of staff, a longer window during which they can send mail through compromised systems and the online shoppers more open to buy the advertised products. However, the spam increase takes place not only during this period, but also from year to year and Driscoll expects new peaks in 2008. Because of the anti-spam legislation and the fact that they are being arrested for undeclared income and tax evasion, spammers are tending to move from US space and therefore the amount of spam originating from the United States is bound to decrease. The developing countries are the newest target because of the technology burst that surpasses the relevant legislation. A top made of December spam showed that on first place is still US with 26.75 percent, then comes France with 18.91 percent, followed by Japan with 12.14 percent, the United Kingdom (7.52 percent) and Germany scoring 5.82 percent. Viruses' top five was completed by variants of the W32.Zafi virus, W32/Document-Maximus, W32/Netsky.BR and W32/Mytob.CQ. If you receive any mail that seems suspicious, from an unknown address or with title that sounds to advertise a certain product, just claim it as spam and stop funding spammers. Furthermore, you will deliver yourself all viruses. Enjoy surfing and take care!
