by Zivka Deleva

Laptops can stay in bags at airport security
by Zuzana Zelenakova

It seems things will get much easier for laptop owners going through airport security. Most people hate it: taking off shoes, all jewelry, and other things and for business travelers it is highly annoying especially that they have to take their laptops out of the bags. Well, now this problem is about to be solved as soon as September or October for The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved for passengers to use specially designed so called “checkpoint friendly” bags, which will enable for the X-ray inspection to carried out without any holdups and complications. The TSA made the decision back in April and also informed luggage manufacturers around the country about the standards to design exactly the type of bag that could pass through the belt scanner with a laptop inside it. Among the companies manufacturing these TSA-approved bags are Pathfinder Luggage, Skooba Design, Targus Inc, and Mobile Edge. The manufacturers should stick to TSA guidelines which say: “The laptop has to have its own special compartment. No components or cords can be in that compartment with the laptop. The laptop must lay flat within the bag. The compartment can contain no metals, heavy plastics, or zippers. The front of the bag can have no obstructions.” However, a lot of bag makers complain about the fact that the TSA won´t allow for a logo to be put on the bag that could identify what is TSA approved bag and what is not. Bag manufacturer Slappa.com stated: “In all honesty, I think this is initially going to create more problems at the X-ray machines because you cannot put the TSA logo on the bag, and the TSA inspectors are not going to be able to easily identify what bags are acceptable and which are not.” The new bags should be ready within a few months and then we´ll see if the decision will bring its fruits.
